Bellevue Wolverines Battle Through Grit and Glory in Triple Matchup Week
The Bellevue Wolverines Boys’ Water Polo team faced a packed schedule this week, taking on Gig Harbor, Stadium, and Roosevelt in a trio of intense matchups that showcased their resilience and teamwork.
Gig Harbor: A Gritty Comeback Falls Just Short
Bellevue’s matchup against Gig Harbor was a rollercoaster from the first whistle. Despite winning the sprint, the Wolverines struggled to convert early opportunities, allowing Gig Harbor to jump to a 5-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. Matthew and Aidric helped keep Bellevue in the game with key goals, while Sol made several crucial saves to prevent the deficit from growing. The second quarter saw Bellevue rally with goals from the corner and strong ball movement, tying the game 6-6 before pulling ahead 7-6 late in the half.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with Aidric scoring early to give Bellevue an 8-6 lead. Gig Harbor responded with a flurry of goals, retaking the lead and pushing it to 12-9 by the end of the quarter. Kaleb and Matthew connected on a post play to keep Bellevue within striking distance. In the fourth, Bellevue mounted a fierce comeback, narrowing the gap to 14-15 with just 24 seconds left. A clutch steal gave them one final chance, but a turnover on the last possession sealed the heartbreaking one-goal loss.
Stadium: Senior Night Victory and Celebration
Senior Night at Bellevue was filled with energy, emotion, and a well-earned win over Stadium High School. The game began with all six seniors—Chirag, Joseph, Desmond, Aidric, Brenden, and Yash—starting the match. Brenden tied the game early with a top-corner shot, but Stadium responded with quick counters to take a 3-1 lead. Bellevue’s defense tightened, and Sol’s goalkeeping kept the game within reach. Aidric’s 5-meter conversion and tap-in from post helped Bellevue tie the game 4-4 midway through the second quarter.
Bellevue took control late in the second with goals from Remi, Quincy, and Matthew, ending the half up 6-4. The third and fourth quarters saw Bellevue extend their lead with strong ball movement, defensive steals, and timely goals from Kaleb, Quincy, and Brenden. Sol continued to anchor the defense with multiple blocks, and the team rotated seniors back in to finish the game. The 12-8 win was followed by a lighthearted JV scrimmage and a heartfelt senior celebration, where Jenna honored each player’s contributions and growth over the past four years.
Roosevelt: A Tight Match Slips Away Late
Bellevue’s home game against Roosevelt was a tightly contested battle from start to finish. After an early goal from Roosevelt, Bellevue responded with man-up conversions from Aidric and Kaleb, taking a 3-1 lead in the first quarter. Sol made key blocks to keep the lead intact, and Ethan added a goal from up top to extend the advantage to 5-2. Roosevelt fought back with a 5-meter shot and a goal from wing, narrowing the gap to 5-4 at halftime.
The third quarter saw Roosevelt surge ahead, scoring three quick goals to take a 7-5 lead. Bellevue responded with goals from Quincy, Ethan, and Remi to tie the game 8-8, but Roosevelt’s perimeter shooting and man-up execution gave them a 9-11 lead heading into the fourth. Bellevue kept pressing, with Quincy scoring off a rebound and Kaleb assisting on key plays, but Roosevelt’s defense held strong. Despite drawing exclusions and creating chances, Bellevue couldn’t close the gap, ending the game with a narrow 10-12 loss.
Despite facing tough competition throughout the week, the Bellevue Wolverines demonstrated heart, hustle, and growth in every matchup. Their near-comeback against Gig Harbor showcased their resilience and ability to rally under pressure, while Senior Night against Stadium was a celebration of leadership, teamwork, and the legacy of six dedicated players. The close contest against Roosevelt highlighted Bellevue’s strategic play and determination, even in the face of late-game setbacks. Across all three games, the Wolverines proved they’re a team with grit and a relentless drive to compete—qualities that will serve them well as they head into the final stretch of the season.
