Bellevue Wolverines Make a Splash in First League Games
The Bellevue Wolverines launched their league campaign with a thunderous statement against longtime rivals Mercer Island in a high-octane showdown Wednesday night at MICC.
From the opening sprint—won by Mercer Island—the tension was electric. The Islanders surged to a quick 2–0 lead in the first quarter, but Bellevue refused to flinch. Freshman Matthew Wan and sophomore Remi Babcox answered the call, matching MI’s physicality and swinging momentum back in the Wolverines’ favor.
Then came the turning point: junior Sol Edwards, named Co-Player of the Game, delivered two thunderous blocks in the second quarter that ignited the bench and flipped the script.
With a slim lead at halftime, Bellevue found its groove. Wan continued his breakout performance, netting multiple goals from set and racking up clutch steals—earning him Co-Player of the Game honors alongside Edwards. The Wolverines closed out the match with a commanding 11–6 victory, showcasing depth, poise, and championship-caliber potential.
JV Wolverines Battle to the Wire
The JV squad also kicked off their season against Mercer Island in a nail-biter. Matching the Islanders’ intensity from the first whistle, Bellevue stayed neck-and-neck throughout. Junior Justin Shen, named Player of the Game, was a force on both ends of the pool—relentless, explosive, and everywhere.
Despite a valiant effort, the Wolverines fell just short, 6–5, in a game that went down to the final seconds.
Road Warriors Dominate in Auburn
Friday night saw Bellevue hit the road for a non-league clash with Auburn Mountainside—and they didn’t disappoint. After trading early goals, the Wolverines took control. Senior Aidric George anchored the defense with six steals, while sophomore Quincy Goldsmith lit up the scoreboard with a flurry of early goals.
Coach rotations gave swing players valuable minutes, and Bellevue ran away with a 19–7 win, dominating both ends of the pool.
The JV squad followed with their own matchup, where senior Chirag Sarao brought infectious energy—drawing exclusions, scoring twice, and driving the offense. Bellevue’s JV team controlled the tempo from start to finish, holding Auburn to just three goals. Final score pending, but the win was never in doubt.
Saturday Showdown at Edgebrook
Saturday’s league doubleheader at Edgebrook Pool tested the JV Wolverines’ grit. After a tough loss toa strong Shorewood team, Bellevue bounced back with a decisive win over Northshore. Junior Ford Martin was instrumental in both games, delivering clutch goals and steady leadership.
With a roster full of new faces, the JV squad is building chemistry and gaining valuable experience early in the season.
Varsity Wolverines Outpace Newport Knights
The weekend wrapped with Bellevue’s second varsity league game against the Newport Knights. After winning the sprint, Bellevue turned over possession and quickly found themselves trailing. Newport struck first, but the Wolverines responded with resilience, edging ahead 7–6 by halftime.
The halftime huddle sparked a shift. Bellevue tightened their defense, created turnovers, and controlled the tempo in the third quarter. Junior Ethan Bai led the charge, generating offensive chances off drives and locking down the defensive end. Sophomore Kaleb Thomson dished out five assists, finding open teammates and keeping the offense humming.
With a solid lead in the fourth, Bellevue rotated bench players and held Newport to just three second-half goals while scoring eight of their own. Final score: 16–9. Another dominant league win for the Wolverines.
